Pedro the Lion in Cleveland
I went to the Pedro the Lion show in Cleveland on Tuesday evening. It was at the Beachland Ballroom, an excellent venue. We were early so we were able to stand right next to the stage, though in hindsight that might not have been the best acoustic choice.
PtL opened the show with a lineup change: T.W. Walsh, the drummer, was now on guitar. The new drummer, Frank Lenz, I recognized from a PtL show in Kentucky where he played drums in a band called Starflyer 59 (and destroyed time and space with the power of his drumming). Seriously, Frank is incredibly good and made most everything sound new. Much like at the Southgate House, the addition of another member filled out their sound and allowed them to play a different variety of songs. Additionaly, T.W. played keyboards for a few parts, allowing Ken and David to come up with different accompaniments.
The only problem was that we were so close to the stage, we were BEHIND the giant speakers mixed to sonic perfection by a sound crew. We had to settle for hearing the show from the amps onstage: not the best mix. Pedro the Lion takes questions from the audience on any topic during their show. I asked about the lineup switch and David simply said that they wanted another guitar, T.W. knew all the songs, and Frank is kick-ass. Another question confirmed the Headphones album is out in May, a new PtL album out in 2006. After their set was done and Low came on (I am not a huge fan), we talked with Frank and Ken (the bassist) about the show, touring, and rice crispy treats.
