the original Paranoid Android

I saw The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy this evening and it was enjoyable. They included my favorite line from the book, the one that had me on the floor, crying from laughing so hard, for several minutes in sixth grade. It got a decent laugh from the crowd, too.

I met with Yared today, who gave the WQO talk Wednesday. He and Neil wrote a paper describing the fine structure of lower ideals of WQO's that I'm reading now. I hope to work with him on some WQO and BQO problems (because we all know finite graphs are better quasi-ordered under minors) in the future. He's fairly funny, too.

the gravy, not the whole damn meatloaf

The longer this site goes, the more pages I end up writing, the more web space I use up. As my paltry 5 megs of free space has dwindled, I have had to delete many of the old images I stored there for this site. I have since started using a service to host images thus eliminating that need, but the old pictures are slowly getting deleted as I write new stuff. Sorry to anyone who has noticed. I'll eventually have to have this thing hosted somewhere else, but I'm here for the time being.

Olive Garden of Evil

I am not going to run the full marathon in May. I'll do another half-marathon in Cleveland and do the full run this fall in Columbus and maybe Dayton, too. I'm not prepared enough and I don't have the confidence to finish, yet. I know I'll still get there, just a little later. My training schedule was tight and the few lapses I had put me too far behind to make 26+ miles by the end of May.

qua cheap bastard

I had been neglecting upkeep of my bike so it was pretty much in shambles after riding through the winter. When I got the brakes and chain replaced today the repair guy was incredulous that I could even get the bike to stop at all, considering I had no brake pads left and had been scraping metal on metal! I have a few more things to do on it before I'll really feel good about it again but at least I'm a little bit safer.

That seems logically impossible, now that I think about it...

I read on John Vanderslice's page that he was looking for places to stop on his solo tour. I called Magnolia Thunderpussy and Used Kids on Thursday to see if they would have him play an in-store performance. I guess they just thought I was his publicist (or representative?) and directed me to booking. I talked with some people and they OK'd it! So I emailed Vanderslice, told him what I knew: the names, phone numbers, and email addresses of the people I talked to. He emailed back today saying he'll come! Nice.

I'm always happy to call bullshit

Josh and I made plans for Friday night. Naturally, he left me waiting hours only to have him back out at the last second. I got mad even though I should have seen it coming a mile away. On the other hand, it took me 10 years to learn to not count on my best friend in grade school, John, and I really only started hanging out with Josh in fall 2002.

The surprise end to this story is that Josh called me up Saturday afternoon and just apologized his heart out for being such a total asshole to me for the last 10 months. He has had this on-again off-again relationship with a girl in his building named Molly who keeps treating him awful and making him act in ways he ends up regretting. He tries to distance himself from her and whenever he does, she latches on tighter. I've watched this develop and seen Josh slowly become aware of the negative effect she's had on him. He asked for my help in trying to lose this girl and call him on his bullshit more. Hey! I'm always happy to call bullshit. I was completely not on his side before he called but I'm always a sucker for an unqualified honest apology that tries to put things right.

Tickets for Lollapalooza are bought. They came to just under $100 each and I'm kicking myself for not being trusting enough to have bought them for $35 BEFORE they announced the lineup. Kathy had emailed me about 2 weeks ago telling me I should -- I just couldn't bring myself to buy them blind.

What's up with the weather? It was 800F the other day and now it's snowing. I'm not complaining, mind you, it's just unusual.

I stopped in around 2:30AM at The Laughing Ogre after work tonight to see how the 24-Hour Comic Day artists were doing. Only 3 guys were doing it and they looked totally professional! I assumed more Crap Art-minded people would be there too. I brought them food but since they were already well stocked, I kept the Doritos for myself.

forever glorify the functorial

My downstairs neighbor smokes too much! It sometimes makes me lose my appetite it's so nauseating and pervasive. I have to change rooms or leave the house when he chain smokes. It's probably not really that horrendous but I have always really hated smoke. It's one thing to go to a concert (well, maybe not so much anymore now that they've passed an indoor public smoking ban) where you expect it to be: you factor that in when making the decision to go. But not having a choice in my own home sucks major donkey balls.

Saunders Mac Lane, 95, Pioneer of Category Theory, Dies

Category theory is the shit, no bones about it. A lot of people call it 'general abstract nonsense', but I've only recently started really learning it and it blows me away every time with its elegance and naturalness. You could rightly say it is the formalization of analogies. And analogies between analogies, etc.

this is what category theory is all about

listening to the D, live

It is starting to get too hot to run whenenver I want. I think I'll have to begin running in the morning, otherwise I'll overheat. It's funny how I can remember thinking, "I'll wish it were this cold someday soon," when I was freezing my ass off running in February.

Winter: too cold.
Spring: too wet.
Summer: too hot.
Fall: just right.

An anti-Bush protester hands out his version of the U.S. Dollar bill during a protest outside the venue of the World Bank and International Monetary Fund spring meetings, in downtown Washington, April 16, 2005. Protest crowds at this weekend's meetings were a fraction of those in the heady days of Seattle, but activists vowed to make enough noise to push their agendas forward. Finance chiefs from the Group of Seven economic powers met Saturday to discuss two of the global economic concerns over which they have least control, high oil prices and China's fixed currency peg.

This is the pose that got me in trouble yesterday. That one pesky back muscle was pretty painful this morning so I'll have to take it light for a day or so.

There were some bad links to previous months' posts that are now fixed. Feel free to read or reread at your leisure now.

set for September

Google map of my house.

I pulled something in my back this morning during yoga and it has been annoying me all day. The real test is after I wake up tomorrow -- usually bad strains get worse and light strains fade by morning for me. Also, I hate running when my back is messed up as it usually exacerbates it.
