Happy Birthday Caitlin!

All of 21 years old. When I was your age...
now you can drink: who cares?!

If you don't get a little emotional about THIS, you're a freaking robot and need to to be melted down or at least have your Emoto-Drive upgraded.

O Math, come to my aid

Laura had me listen to Mozart's 'Jupiter' symphony. It's mostly beyond me for now but, as a bonus for me, the fourth movement is in five-part fugue! So I found this today:

Amadeus Downtown
Thursday May 11, 8pm
Piano Concerto Series: Concert #3 “Mozart the Creator”
Jon Nakamatsu piano, Patrick Reynolds conductor, Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra
MOZART – Serenade No. 13 in G major, K. 525 “Eine kleine Nachtmusik” – Piano Concerto No. 27 in B-flat major, K. 595 – Symphony No. 41 in C major, K. 551 “Jupiter”
Schuster Center, Downtown Dayton

Q. Whew! Is democracy on the march?
A. Democracy was on the march. Sadly, freedom and democracy were caught in a blizzard and freedom was forced to eat democracy to survive.
Q. It died as it lived: sautéed in garlic sauce with a side of scalloped potatoes.
A. Democracy is survived by sectarian violence and fanaticism. In lieu of flowers, please send a coherent exit strategy.

it must have been the wife

How strange: I know this guy! Laura worked on this farm (with Jenny Hoople, Kelly Mack, and Jess Roberts of Allegheny College) for a year and I visited them there often in Caledonia, IL. I slept many nights in the barn on the above movie poster.

hoaphing

If you know guitar, learn the chords to 'Round Midnight so the next time I'm around we can play it. It's a groovin' 32 chords of fun. I heard this again on Sunday when I went to a Columbus Jazz Orchestra concert with Laura where they played a lot of bebop (my fav jazz).

emo beard boy go home

I haven't updated for longer than is usual for me. I am not dead or at least not noticibly so.

I feel like stenciling. I'll take some pictures when I'm done.

Happy Valentine's Day

A Haitian man walks past a barricade in Port-au-Prince February 13, 2006. Smoke from burning tires rose over the capital of Port-au-Prince from impromptu barricades as suspicions spread among protesting former President Rene Preval supporters that the count was being tampered with to stop the one-time ally of ousted President Jean-Bertrand Aristide from winning a first-round victory.

I'll run it again next year, too
I ran my race up the Terminal Tower on Saturday morning. I was a little nervous, since I hadn't really trained too much for it. But I did very well, in my estimation. The stairwell was not overly spacious, so to prevent too much pileup one runner was sent up every 20 seconds. No one passed me on the way up, and I passed about 30 people. I had no idea what to expect, so I told myself to be pleased if I finished in less than 20 minutes. I finished in about 9 minutes.

string sliced fingers

Jeremy Enigk (of Sunny Day Real Estate) is almost done with his second solo album. Return of the Frog Queen, his first, is on my top 10 list of favorite albums so I am greatly looking forward to comparing it to the new one. Also, he's going to tour for at least six months! I only saw SDRE once (in Pittsburgh during college) before they broke up -- and it was amazing.

Also, I won some contest to see David Bazan and the Undertow Orchestra in Chicago next Friday for free. Excellent: road trip.

I'm collecting interesting videos on YouTube. Send me some if you find anything worth watching.

boingboing mentioned a new sitcom on the BBC called "The IT Crowd" and I checked it out: hysterically funny. I highly recommend it for anyone who does anything technical or who is even tangentially associated with geek culture. I've seen the first three episodes and it retains a beautiful sense of the absurd.

Have I ever mentioned here that I heat a brick in my oven to keep my feet warm? Yeah, I totally do. And it's awesome. After riding around on my bike out in the cold (a look at the temp says 19o) you're damn right I do. I heat a regular red construction brick to 200o for 15 minutes, take it out, wrap it in a towel, and keep my feet on it while I'm on the computer or reading. At first I was reluctant to do it -- something about it seems so antiquated -- but after you do it once, you lose all reservations.

Grief, Sir, is a species of idleness.

I am about to watch Sympathy for Lady Vengeance (subtitles) by Chan-wook Park.

I saw a road sign while I was going to class the other day. It said:

DANGER
TRUCK
TRAFFIC

And for some reason my mind parsed this as (Danger Truck) Traffic. Where were the Danger Trucks? Do they have emblazoned lightning bolts on their side panels? Do their drivers wear protective helmets, what with all the danger? What causes the danger? Is it the trucks themselves, or are the trucks merely passive participants, solemnly traversing this danger with care? If it's the latter, does the danger affect only the trucks, or do I as a bystander need to be concerned about more than just the traffic?

>So, if its 'good for your career' its ok to be a robot?
I don't care whether it is good for my career or not, being a robot would be totally awesome.
