We start with authentic letter graded meat...

I am drinking tequila and orange juice while reading math. Ah, the life!

I didn't have to go to work tonight, as my theater was without power. No electricity, no movies, no worky Landon.

Fab and I had lunch with Laura today. She is providing us with scads of vegetables from her farm this summer. We will exploit her mercilessly for produce.

There will be a party in the new place July 15th, perhaps. I have a race to run on the 16th so that may mean I have to go to sleep early and not overly indulge myself (WWS).

I am going to MILO in a bit to maybe play guitar and talk to girls.

<sigh>

I could do without the girls part.

and the only way to beat it is to bat it down

Tracking down undelivered mail is like nailing Jello to a tree. There are postal employees everywhere ostensibly existing to help you get you mail, but no one can offer any sort of assistance. They just pass you along to someone else who can't help you.

it doesn't always have to be constructive

I started reading Paradise Lost yesterday. Wish me luck, people. I am going for a chapter a day. We'll see how that works out.

napping until my next class

We need to find a cable for Fab's digital camera. We (read: I) filled it with pictures recently, which are becoming less pertinent the more time passes.

Even running in the morning now isn't much help. It's still too hot to be comfortable. My next race is here in Columbus on Saturday, July 16 at 9AM. An almanac I consulted online indicated that it was one of the hottest days of the year. Great.

We have been listening to nerdcore all weekend. MC Frontalot has mad skills. But MC++ has one of the best names.

The mouse is out of batteries again. Goddamn it anyway!

Root2: we're irrational!

Fabrizio and I may just begin our own nerdcore group. To pay our respect to both the crafts of rhyme and math, let's say. I'm gunning for the name 'Root2'.

What if he, you know, like, *hates* Abraham Lincoln?

Black People Love Us!

It downpoured at ComFest! Flooding in the streets, knocking over trees, biblical sort of deluge. We found Laura there and walked home with her. Pizza was ordered and then Fab left to go play with the neighbors I don't know. He's already met so many more people here in 2 weeks than I have in 22 months. I guess I really am antisocial. Let me retire to the temperature-controlled sensory deprivation chamber that I call my room to contemplate it...

More ordinal notation systems and investigating the mysteries of Gamma_0 this weekend. Complex analysis homework, too.

the bloom upon my misery

Waiting for girls for any reason is a bad idea.
Waiting for girls to get dressed up is the worst.
Delay. Delay. Delay.
Two hours later. The car won't start. Can you boys walk over?
No.
Boys will meet you there.

That was a bad idea too. As soon as a more interesting boy shows up, we are left in the dust.
Fabrizio is always right; girls are a bad idea from the start.

I look forward to a female-free ComFest tomorrow.

Can we be happy?

Comfest starts today. I'll be there around 6PM tonight.

We're finalizing our move to next door. A large party will accompany the transfer.

The drama at MILO is oppresive at times. I have to learn to be meaner. A large part of my incapacity to deal with said drama is a result of an incomplete cynicism.

If I say yes to you, who could I say no to?

HERE is a fantastic interview with Gene Wilder.

We had an OK first day of class. The number theory course was a wash: there were high school students in it. And what's worse, high school teachers. They learn even less reliably. So none of that for me.

Complex analysis is pretty low-level, but 1) this is the summer and 2) McIntyre teaches it and he's always fun. This gives me more time to better quasi-order. And learn Riemannian geometry from Fabrizio.

Caitlin, Steve, and Emily visited. We hung at MILO, burned things, went to Panini's and played erotic touch-screen video games (which were highly unerotic), and played cards. Good to see everyone. I took plenty of pictures, but Fab left the cord that transfers them to the computer in New York. So we'll have to find another at some point.

All Your Base Are Turned Five
Fabrizio and I made and hung an elaborate sign in the student center at Allegheny with an All Your Base joke. It hung for a few weeks and no one understood it.

Chinese food, math. Excellent. We are going to MILO tonight to see a concert and enjoy the festivities. Keep lowering my expectations...

Guadalupe had her kittens: would anyone like one?

It looks like the house next door finally got what was coming to them. Its occupants have been harassing Sam and Kate (in the other half of this house) for weeks, now, enough to make them decide to move out. But as I write this, four police cars have stopped traffic on my street and at least a half-dozen police officers are surrounding/in the house, with loaded guns drawn. I heard a scream earlier but I was unsure what it was: it appears that domestic violence pisses off the cops something fierce.

Less unexpected than it should have been

Whatever I had with Jaymee is done. I still have to confirm a few facts for the record, but I should have seen it coming.

That's why I shouldn't ever divert my attention.

Evidently it was all rumors and innuendo. I should stop believing anything anyone has to say, ever.

no sticky residue

Fab is here. We have been doing some bookkeeping for school; filling outpaperwork, etc.

We saw Batman Beginslast night then hung out at MILO. We have been busy! But also there are pictures of our busyness.

collapsing in a glowing heap

The moon is out and the clouds are racing across the sky. Fireflies are in full force, honeysuckle is in bloom, and I have a song stuck in my head. It's a fantastic night out and my mind is clear as I take my walk.

I saw Jim Volk at the theater the other day. I stopped him and asked him if he played guitar. He said that he did and I told him that I remember him from a night he played about 4 songs at the (now defunct) Arabica Coffeehouse in Coventry while I was in high school. That was about 7 years ago! I'll see him at ComFest.

I’m not comfortable with categories, and I distrust most definitions. The word definition is based on the word finite, which would seem to indicate that once we’ve defined something, we don’t need to think about it anymore.

be more of an asshole

Six Feet Under - 5x02 - Dancing for Me

I talked with Jaymee some last night. What we have between us is fairly well undefined so I asked her what she thought. She was hesitant to talk about it. What I got was that she likes things to remain uncategorized, that she would like to take things slowly because of her past relationship (and to please be patient), and that any concerns I have about her disposition toward me are unfounded as she truly likes me.

And also, to paraphrase, that I don't always have to be such a nice guy if I don't want to. I have a fear of offending that ends up defeating its own purpose sometimes. Check.

Note to self: be MORE of an asshole.

I swear he's not dead!

He's just still not here yet. Maybe he'll get here tonight. He's really not dead.

Last night at the concert, Sam (Iron & Wine) played a song I didn't know called 'Trapeze Swinger' that I thought was amazing. It has some of the best lyrical imagery I've heard in a long time. Beware, though. It's a wonderful nine minutes short.

I went to the show with Jaymee and Abby. About halfway through, the large man standing in front of us left to go get beer. With his hulking frame removed I noticed that Laura and her man were about 5 feet away from us. We spoke a bit during the show and I introduced everyone afterward. It was a strange coincidence, given that the show was packed and the place is huge.

Anthony has left for his 10-day bike trip through the Canadian Rockies. He'll be back for just a few days before heading out again, this time to New Jersey to install some of his art for a collector. I'm making him join me July 16th for another half-marathon, again with his machine strapped to his back. I am shooting for 9-minute miles. Training so far has been right on track: something it definitely was not last time.

never ending

Ok. Fabrizio missed the bus to Columbus. He might be here tomorrow. Who knows at this point? I'm almost afraid people will think I've killed him and am trying to cover by continuing to say that he'll get here tomorrow.

Laura just left. She stopped over to drop off two pepper plants for me. She visited Meadville over the weekend to see Kelly Mack. Laura plans to move there, buy some land, and farm. She's going to the concert tonight as well. More to discuss later, I have to make it to the bank.

Speaking of friends, I saw Melanie Homan at my work over the weekend. She and Ryan were in town. She said they'll be back in August.

I switched my shifts around so I can go to the concert tonight. Fab will likely join us.

I'm a little nervous about Fab moving in. I've never had a proper roommate before, at home or in college. I was an RA for two years and had to deal with stupid roommate bickering so I recognize that intelligent people can act in irrational ways when it comes to living arrangements. I hope I'm not too much of an asshole to bear. Now back to cleaning...

one-stop family update

Ok. Fabrizio is coming *tomorrow*, now. I will try to take off of work so I can go to the Iron and Wine concert. He'll probably join us.

I am off to run this afternoon after having eaten my own weight in ice cream yesterday.

I am in the process of changing my web host and domain name this weekend. Sometime early next week there will be a redirect from this address to my new space. I was tired of having to delete old material to post new things. I waited too long to transfer so I cannibalistically ate my own words to fuel new ones. If you peruse the pages from when I began writing, there are virtually no images. I even deleted a few posts that I felt were now so barren as to be meaningless. I hope it won't look so bad: I'll try to clean it up after everything is moved.

In a new weekly series, Salon takes on the classics you always meant to read -- but never did. HERE.

Suddenly I'm addicted to Gatorade

I had a long run the other day in some real heat and had the notion it might be nice. But ever since then I have been chugging it like it's my last supper. I must be really dehydrated all the time if this is what it feels like to be otherwise.

Abby called after she was off work today and invited me over to MILO to hang out. We spoke of shoes and ships and sealing wax before Anthony and crew ("I'm Petra, from Holland!") arrived to build/make a mockery of a fire out back. They were too drunk to be of any fun so I left.

I'm processing the singular case for the Erdos-Dushnik-Miller theorem while smelling sharply of smoke.

what have I gotten myself into?

I just talked to Fabrizio. He will be here in Columbus for good on Sunday. He's travelling light at the moment, so he only has one bag of things. The rest of his stuff will get here in August, I think.

There is talk about moving in next door (Sam and Kate's place) after the lease in this apartment is up. That would be great on several levels: I like the location, moving would be easy, lots of space, the landlord is fine, and we could move in by August.

Jaymee is gone for the weekend so I will catch up on sleep, math.

Andreas Blass
A partition theorem for perfect sets
ABSTRACT: Let P be a perfect subset of the real line, and let the n-element subsets of P be partitioned into finitely many classes, each open (or just Borel) in the natural topology on the collection of such subsets. Then P has a perfect subset whose n-element subsets lie in at most (n-1)! of the classes.

András Hajnal
On the Chromatic Number of Graphs and Set Systems

Hajnal is a wonderful man. I learned axiomatic set theory from him at Rutgers. It was then that I began really studying Ramsey theory and became fascinated with the partition calculus he and Erdős invented. I had to keep checking their book out of the library every two weeks and it became annoying, so I asked him whether I could borrow a copy. He just *gave* me his copy of Partition Relations for Cardinals and I've slept with it under my pillow ever since.
